Indefinite Leave to Remain (ILR) allows permanent settlement in the UK to overseas nationals. Individuals who obtain ILR have the right to live and work in the UK without any restrictions. The right to travel to and from the UK is unrestricted.
Indefinite leave to remain (ILR) requirements
- Five years of continuous residence in the UK as a work permit holder, a Highly Skilled Migrant, under Tier 1 or Tier 2 of the new Points Based System, or a combination of any or all of the above
- Five years residence in the UK as the Spouse of a British Citizen or a Settled Person
- 10 years long legal residency
- Five years of continuous residence in the UK as an Ancestry Visa holder
- Former members of HM Forces if they have been living in the UK for four years
- Gurkha who has served in the British Army for at least four years
